The Serotonin Power Diet - Book Review | Work It Training
By Kyle Golden, Founder and Certified Personal Trainer
It is estimated that about 21 million Americans have been diagnosed with clinical depression or anxiety disorders and of those many are taking anti-depressant and serotonin specific reuptake inhibitor (SSRIs) medications to help relieve that depression and anxiety. A common and unfortunate side effect of many of these drugs is that they can cause considerable weight gain even for those who have never had a weight problem. There are a few theories as to why this happens but what would be so helpful to those taking these medications is a possible solution to eliminate or help minimize this side effect.
I have researched what information is generally available on this topic and haven’t really found too much offering significant solutions. Recently I ran across the book “The Serotonin Power Diet” by Judith Wurtman, PhD and Nina Marquis, MD. I have found it very enlightening. The authors take the time to explain the connection between hormones and weight gain which is very much connected to diet and timing of carbs and protein. They offer simple recipes, strategies, and tips to help those who have experienced weight gain due to depression, anxiety, and the medications designed to help those issues.
If you happen to be someone who has had this experience I highly recommend reading this book. It is available in digital format on Kindle and Apple iBooks and in paperback. You can also visit the book’s website.
